Music

Hello, and welcome to this new space! I’m glad you’re here. My plan is to share practical tips, creative ideas, and inspiration about once a month.

I began teaching yoga and dance in 1976—what feels like a lifetime ago! From the very start, I knew it was what I wanted to do. Teaching yoga and dance brought me joy and kept me learning every day. Nearly five decades later, that sense of purpose and curiosity remains.

It’s been a meaningful journey guiding children through the creative and playful world of yoga. Their responses—thoughtful, surprising, and sometimes wonderfully funny—continue to inspire me. It’s a privilege to work in a medium that is both imaginative and full of possibility.

For this first post, I’d like to share one of my favorite teaching tools: music. Music has a way of connecting us to our bodies, helping us notice the subtle balance between muscle engagement and relaxation.

Here’s a track I often use in class. It’s ideal for moving gently and mindfully between simple postures. Close your eyes, let the music guide you, and see where it takes you.

Try moving ‘lazily’ through a gentle sequence of your choice:

There’s no rush—move slowly and mindfully, letting the music guide you. Keep going as long as you’re enjoying yourself, and let your body relax into the flow.

I find that if I ask children to move slowly, they are more likely to do so when they can connect and recognise musical qualities that inspire a slower way of moving.

Thank you for visiting! I hope this blog becomes a helpful resource for your own practice and teaching. Stay tuned for more reflections and ideas to come.
